Pico de Orizaba (5700 m.a.s.l.)
We will wake up late, enjoy a leisurely breakfast, and finish our preparations for Pico de Orizaba. In order to arrive at the base
camp of Pico de Orizaba, an all-terrain vehicle will be used to transport us up the difficult path. Once settled at the cabin “Piedra Grande,” named after the massive boulders in the vicinity, we will rest and take pleasure in yet another great meal.
While absorbing the view of Pico de Orizaba, towering above our heads, I will make a nutritious breakfast at the Piedra Grande cabin. We will organize our packs in preparation for our ascent to high camp at 16,600 feet. This unique hike through mixed terrain, is extensive and difficult, and includes several icy sections that will keep us on our toes. After setting up our high altitude tents, we will take this once in a life time opportunity to view the rainforest beneath us and the Caribbean Ocean in the horizon. Dinner will me made, while discussing plans for the final team ascent.
Summit day ascent
After another beautiful alpine start, summit day on Orizaba is the challenge for which you have long been waiting. From high camp, we will negotiate the mixed section below the glacier, and then attack the massive Jamapa Glacier. Once we reach the lip of the glacier, we will make the final and difficult traverse to the top of México. The summit will provide us with one of the most breathtaking and inspirational moments of our lives. Again, you will see the tropical rain forest and ocean to the east. To the west, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the volcanoes Izta and Popo, and the largest city in the world, Mexico City. And beneath our feet, lies the never-ending bottom of Pico de Orizaba’s crater. Return to high camp and pick up our gear, and descend to Tlalchichuca, where we will celebrate with some well earned rest and Mexican cuisine. If weather or conditions impede us, we will return to high camp for another try the following morning.
